Self criticism is something that we are all guilty of at one time or another. However, being overly critical of yourself is going to wear you down overtime. In 2022, we are getting rid of self criticism! We are learning to become our loudest cheerleaders and we are showering ourselves with positive vibes. I like to combat self criticism by practicing a few mindfulness techniques.
Meditation Is One of My Favorite Mindfulness Techniques
In my last blog about creating a balanced life, I mentioned using meditation as a mindfulness technique and that is because it is my ‘go to’ technique for so many things! When I feel overwhelmed with negative thoughts and feelings, I can feel it in my body. My body is reacting to these thoughts by going through some form of a fight/flight/freeze response. Physically, my body tenses and my breathing quickens.
When this happens, I find a quiet space with no distractions. I begin to calm my mind and body with breathing exercises. Personally, I prefer to sit; but you can do this while sitting, standing, or lying on your back. With my eyes closed, I put all of my focus on each breath. I take a deep, slow breath in through my nose; holding my breath for at least two seconds. Followed by a slow exhale through my mouth. It also really helps me when I focus on the sensation of the air coming in through my nose and pushing out through my mouth. Or even concentrating on the rise and fall of my chest with each breath. I can feel the tension leaving my body with each breath.
Acknowledging the Self Criticism
Acknowledgement of negative thinking is also one of many mindfulness techniques that I use to combat self criticism. Once my body and mind are calm, I reflect on my thoughts; acknowledging the self criticism and negative thinking. By becoming more aware of your negative thinking you are better able to retrain your self critical behaviors. At this time, my focus isn’t on banishing the negative thoughts. My focus is to become more aware of my negative thinking.
Flip It and Reverse It – Missy Elliot
The opposite of self criticism is self compassion. So, just like Missy Elliot told us to do; I’m going to flip it and reverse it. Instead of judging myself I am going to empower myself. By treating my negative thinking with compassion, I am training my mind to be kinder, stronger, and more resilient. I intentionally seek out a positive attribute of mine. This helps me to mentally balance out the negative thought with a positive one. When I remind myself that I am not seeking perfection but seeking a better me than I was yesterday; I allow myself grace.
See Yourself Through My Lens
We are too critical of ourselves and can very often become our own worst enemy. Which is why I believe that boudoir photography is such a transformative experience! By stepping out of your comfort zone, you are able to see yourself in a whole new light. During your photoshoot, I am here to guide you through this process; bringing out your inner Goddess while unleashing newfound confidence and strength.
Combating self criticism by using mindfulness techniques does take time and practice. I am committed to getting rid of self criticism within myself and as a boudoir photographer. I love empowering women by helping you to step out of your comfort zones and to see yourself through my lens. Guiding you to embrace and reconnect with who you truly are.
