Preparing for a boudoir session is an experience in itself—one that’s all about celebrating YOU. Let’s talk about a timeline to help you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to step into the spotlight. Here’s how to prep like a pro:
Weeks Before: Plan and Pamper
- Book Your Beauty and Self-Care Appointments
Now’s the time to line up your appointments! Whether it’s a haircut, color, waxing, or a facial, get these locked in so you can look and feel your best. - Find the Perfect Pieces
Start early to hunt down those amazing pieces you’ll wear for your session. Give yourself time to consider shipping if you’re shopping online. Keep your vision in mind—whether it’s lace, leather, something cozy, or something daring. - Hit the Thrift Store
You might find unique, vintage pieces that add a special touch. Thrifting can be a treasure trove of unexpected gems, and you’ll often find one-of-a-kind items to add personality to your shoot. - Peek Into Your Closet
Sometimes, the perfect piece is right there waiting. Don’t overlook that favorite jacket, a cozy sweater, or an oversized shirt that could add layers (and layers of you) to your look.
The Week Before: Hydrate, Prep, and Pamper
- Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Start showing your skin some love. Hydrated, glowing skin will photograph beautifully. Make moisturizing a daily habit, if it’s not already. - Book (or DIY) a Mani/Pedi
Clean, well-groomed nails make a world of difference in photos, even if they’re not flashy. No polish is better than chipped polish, but if you’re a polish lover, soft and neutral colors work best. - Wax 2-3 Days Before
Whether it’s brows, bikini, or anything else, do any waxing a couple of days out to avoid redness or irritation on shoot day. Whatever helps you feel sleek and smooth! - Show Your Lips Some Love
Get a beeswax balm or a nice lip mask on those lips, and they’ll thank you! You’ll be surprised at how hydrated, happy lips can brighten up every smile. - Hydrate Like It’s Your Job
Drinking water isn’t just good for your skin—it’s going to help with flexibility and ease of movement. Boudoir sessions are all about bending, stretching, and letting loose, and hydration will help your body feel ready to move.
The Day Before: Go Easy and Get Ready
- Wash and Dry Hair (But Skip the Heat Styling)
Clean hair with minimal product is best. Air-drying is even better to avoid heat damage, and your stylist can help work with your hair naturally on the day of the shoot. - Skip Foods That Make You Feel Bloated
Think about how you want to feel the next day, so avoid anything heavy or overly processed. Stick to foods that make you feel good and light. - Shave or Touch Up
If shaving is your thing, do it the night before or the morning of your session. That fresh, smooth feeling can help you feel extra ready to shine. - Pack Your Bags (and Then Some)
Overpacking is 100% okay here. More is definitely better than not enough. Bring options—your photographer can help you narrow things down if needed, but it’s better to have extra choices than wish you’d brought something more.
Morning of Your Session: Final Touches
- Exfoliate and Cleanse
Use a gentle exfoliant to make your skin glow. A clean, fresh base is ideal for your shoot day, so take a few extra minutes to pamper your skin. - Wear Loose, Comfy Clothing
You’re going to want soft, loose clothes—think sweatpants, a hoodie, or a cozy robe. Preferably no bra and underwear, since tight clothing can leave pressure marks on the skin, which can show up in photos. - Avoid Tight Accessories
Skip hair ties around your wrist and anything else that might leave marks on your skin. The goal is for your skin to be relaxed, free, and ready to shine!
And there you have it—a little guide to help you feel like the absolute best version of yourself as you prepare for this empowering, one-of-a-kind experience. Take your time, savor the process, and get excited!
