When I first began shooting Boudoir Photography, I had to educate my friends, family, and strangers about what boudoir photography really is. This is when I first noticed the stigmas surrounding boudoir photography. Many people had no idea what it was and others thought it was porn. It’s not.
It wasn’t until I showed them boudoir photos that they truly understood what it is. When people ask me what I do for a living, I usually joke and say, “I photograph half naked women.” And while that isn’t entirely untrue, I get a kick out of their facial expressions. Of course I follow this up by giving more information, sharing my website and portfolio with them, and sharing how transformational a boudoir session is.
Overcoming Stigmas Surrounding Boudoir Photography
I receive messages regularly from people interested in a boudoir session but still struggling to overcome their personal stigmas surrounding boudoir photography. What are these stigmas and how can you overcome them? I am going to break down the stigmas that I most frequently hear and how you can overcome them.
“I don’t have a partner.”
You do not need a partner to treat yourself to a boudoir session. While we do offer couples boudoir photography sessions, the majority of our clients come in solo. Oftentimes we tell ourselves that we need to have a partner to share our photos with to have a boudoir session. You don’t.
DO IT FOR YOU!
Schedule a boudoir session for YOU. Whether it’s just because you want the boudoir experience or because you want to celebrate yourself. Pro Tip: you do not need a reason to celebrate yourself! You do not need a reason to invest in yourself. So many of my clients are single and use their boudoir experience as a way to reconnect with themselves. The boudoir experience is truly transformational.
“I’m not fit. I need to lose weight first.”
If I had a dollar for every time that I hear this, I could buy my own private island by now. Seriously, I hear it so much and it breaks my heart that women have been conditioned to believe that we should look a certain way.
We are subjected to body shaming so many times throughout the day, the last thing that we should be doing is body shaming ourselves. If you keep waiting for ‘the right time’ you will never be fully ready. The excuses will always be there.
As a professional boudoir photographer, I have studied the best boudoir poses for various body shapes. I will talk to you about your mental blocks and any insecurities that you may have. I am very good at showcasing your best assets to capture flattering boudoir photos.
Come are you are at this moment. You will leave your boudoir session loving yourself and your body in ways you never knew existed! Our past blog, How Boudoir Photography Helps You To Love Your Body, explains this very well!
“I’m not sexy enough.”
Sexy is a state of mind. I have designed every inch of our 4500+ square foot boudoir studio with careful attention to detail. When you enter into our downtown Norfolk sensual sanctuary, you will begin the process of reconnecting with yourself and your sensuality.
My job is not to make you look sexy, my job is to make you feel sexy. However sexy looks to you. That is what resonates through the camera lens, that is what I capture in your boudoir photographs. A boudoir experience with me is a process, a transformation, an empowering experience that will make you feel like your best self. You deserve that.
“What will my friends and family think?”
Fuck what they think! Seriously, this isn’t my life’s motto for nothing. First, your friends and family do not need to know that you are having a boudoir session. I have several clients that do not want their images shared, in fact I only share about 20% of my clients sessions. Respect and trust are vital to our relationship, which is why we ask you if you do or do not want your images shared. Many of my clients are public figures and do not wish to have their images shared. I totally respect that.
Please do not deny yourself a boudoir experience because of what your friends and family may think. They will only know if you tell them. You aren’t doing it for them, you are doing it for YOU!
Stop the Stigmas Surrounding Boudoir Photography
These are just a few of the stigmas that I have come across, are yours similar? The best way to overcome stigmas surrounding boudoir photography is to ask questions. Myself and my staff are always more than happy to answer any questions that you may have. But you don’t have to just ask us, our Babe Cave is full of clients that I have worked with and they would be more than happy to help you on your boudoir journey!
